Hummingbird Bakery: Life Is Sweet! (Review)

  Hello friends!

Today I'm sharing something very exciting and very yummy with you - it's the new book by the guys over at the Hummingbird Bakery! Ahh! I purchased their original 'Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook ' a number of years ago and have had so much fun trying out the recipes from there, so when I was given the chance to test out their new stuff I couldn't resist!
'Life Is Sweet' contains a load of American-style bakes (aka the best) which range in difficulty from easy to moderate so there is something for everyone.
When I was flicking through the book to see what I wanted to make, I found it so hard to pick! There are literally so many different options from classics like Red Velvet Pancakes to new twists like 7 Up Pound Cake (yes - the lemon and lime drink we all had as kids!).
I decided to fold down the corners of the ones that looked interesting and by the end nearly every other page had a corner folded, no joke. If you're a fan of big, special occasion-type bakes then you definitely won't be disappointed but, similarly, if you're a fan of good ol'-fashioned favourites you'll find something too!
I feel like there was something to suit every level and type of baker, in every category, with the book being a real breeze to use both to decide which recipe you want to create as well as giving tips on making it and the appropriate equipment to use. So whether you're looking for an 'easy as pie' (oh yes, it's happening) bake or you want to try something a little more fancy, you won't be disappointed.
I decided to start off with something a little more on the complex side (clearly I fancied a challenge!) which were these adorable little candies called 'Divinities' - so cute right?! Essentially they are little drops of delicious Italian meringue with a toasted pecan on top. Simple but effective.
The recipe didn't call for any complex ingredients, which can usually put me off, and the only bit of special equipment you needed was a sugar/digital thermometer, though, to be honest, you could probably just wing it if you're a bit more experienced. The majority of recipes don't require you to have any other kind of baking equipment than you would usually have in the house which is a big bonus for me!
Anyway, this is how they turned out! Very yummy to eat and super cute to look at!
However, even though I'm a pretty experienced baker and have even attended a cooking class on making this type of meringue, I was a bit unclear on some things when following the recipe. I feel like if you'd made these, or something similar, before then you'd be fine but I think the instructions were a little vague, even for somebody with a bit of experience.
Having said this, I have definitely had worse experiences with following certain recipes so it hasn't put me off and I'll be back to try out their Blackberry Limeade Bars and Buttermilk Ice Cream very soon!
Life is Sweet is currently available to buy on Amazon.
Are you a fan of the Hummingbird Bakery books? What has been your favourite bake so far?
Stay inspired!
